Officer of the month luncheon Wednesday
The Kona Crime Prevention Committee will honor Officer Nicholas McDaniel as the KCPC “officer of the month” at noon Wednesday for his outstanding performance as a member of the Hawaii Police Department.
The guest speaker will be Susan Akiyama, homelessness coordinator with the county Office of Housing.
The Kona Crime Prevention Committee encourages and supports our police department in their efforts to prevent crime, deter potential criminals and enforce our laws. The committee also provides needed police equipment for Kona District officers when department funds cannot support those needs.
The public is invited to attend the luncheons normally held on the first Wednesday of each month. Cost is $20, all inclusive at Huggo’s restaurant.

AARP offers tax help
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide will offer free tax help to low- to moderate-income taxpayers at three sites in West Hawaii.
AARP Tax-Aide is available free to taxpayers with low- and moderate-income, with preference given to those age 50 and older.
West Hawaii has four sites offering service beginning Tuesday and continuing through April 14.
– Hale Halawai, located at 75-5600 Alii Drive, is open on a walk-in basis Thursdays beginning Feb. 4 from 8 a.m. to noon.
– Yano Hall, located at 82-6156 Mamalahoa Highway in Captain Cook, is open on a walk-in basis Wednesdays beginning Feb. 3 from 9 a.m. to noon.
– Catholic Charities, located at 73-5618 Maiau St., Ste B201, is open Tuesdays from noon to 4 p.m. For an appointment at the Catholic Charities site call 491-9085, walk-ins are also welcome.
– Waimea Community Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays. Call 885-4722 or 388-6645 for an appointment. Walk-ins will be accommodated if time permits.
Caregiving classes offered throughout West Hawaii
Hawaii Community Caregiver Network is sponsoring Powerful Tools for Caregivers classes in several communities. The free, six-week class series is designed to help family caregivers cope with the demands of caring for their loved ones.
In Waimea, classes will begin Tuesday and continue every Tuesday until March 8. Afternoon classes will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Tutu’s House, 64-1032 Mamalahoa Highway, Suite 305. Evening classes will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Hoonani Day Center, 65-1267 B Lindsey Road.
In Captain Cook, evening classes will begin Feb. 17 and continue every Wednesday until March 23 at Yano Hall. Class times are from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
In Kailua-Kona, classes start Feb. 29 and continue every Monday until April 4 and are offered from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Regency at Hualalai, 75-181 Hualalai Road.
Family caregivers will learn self-care tools to reduce personal stress, communicate their needs to family members and healthcare or service providers and make tough caregiving decisions.
Attendance is required at all six classes. A $25 deposit for course materials will be collected at the first class and refunded upon completion of the 6-week series. Participants who complete the series will receive The Caregiver Helpbook at no charge. Advance registration is required.

Community Seed Library roundtable meets Tuesday
The Community Seed Library hosts a roundtable with Nancy Redfeather of The Kohala Center 5-6 p.m. Tuesday.
This discussion, sponsored by the Friends of the Libraries, Kona, will cover gardening in Hawaii and include such topics as invasive species, growing in season, building and maintaining healthy soil, meeting the maintenance needs of your plants, and dealing with plant problems in your garden.

Senior Roundtable Hui meets
The Senior Roundtable Hui will discuss “An-Age Integrated Society” during its meeting from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Tuesday.
The gathering of seniors, family members, those in the aging industry, and anyone interested in aging issues will be at the Pink Mocha Cafe, which is just above Home Depot. Discussion will focus on goal-setting for socializing, exercise, nutrition and more.
There is no charge for the meeting other than the optional purchase of coffee or tea. Parking is easy to access.

Stroke survivor support group offered
A stroke survivor support group is held from 10:30 a.m. to noon on the first Tuesday of each month at Life Care Center of Kona, 78-6957 Kamehameha III Road. There meeting is free.
This is a group for adult stroke survivors. If a caregiver is needed to introduce a stroke survivor, that’s OK. Aphasia, apraxia, and dysarthria stroke survivors are welcome.
